Chapter Twelve

Stephanie sighed and looked over the list, and said, “We have time, who should we go after next on the list? Do you sense any fae beings around us?”

“Of course I do. There is a dwarf closest to us, so let us talk about him first. He was sentenced as he made magical weapons for Ramsey to use to try and take over the kingdom. I am surprised that he is by himself rather than with Ramsey. He has the power to enchant things. He was not sent to prison with any weapons, but he may have made some by now.”

“It is interesting that he’s by himself. Does he have a family back in your world?” Amelia asked. “Cellica said that most dwarfs are very social beings.”

“Should we make contact with his family in the Elven Republic to get his backstory, or do you have it in your head?” Stephanie asked, pointing to her mind. She hoped to find more stories like Michael and the fairy that Gormon met at a nearby cabin—fae creatures that were unjustly sent to prison.

“Let’s return to your car, and you three can wait there while I contact his family. It should not take more than an hour, and I think you will have to move your car to be closer to the dwarf.”

They nodded and did as he suggested, while he portaled back to the realm.

“Did you reconnect with your family while you were recovering from the battle with the Merrow?” Stephanie asked Michael.

“I did, and I’ll admit it was awkward. The healers brought my father to the House of Healing. My mother died a long time ago.”

“Did your father remarry?”

“No. Elves marry forever. Often after one spouse dies, the other soon follows as they have lost a part of their soul. In the case of marrying a human, an elf knows they will spend centuries without a spouse, but they can’t remarry as we are a monogamous species, and you violate that principle even if it’s the afterlife. Our gods would frown upon it.”

“How did your father find a human to marry? I thought you avoided interacting with Earth?”

“When the original elves came to Earth searching for a place to build their prison, my father met my mother. She was a witch like you, and your world doesn’t have a great record at dealing fairly with witches. She knew she would be safer in the Elven Republic, but she didn’t expect the king’s attitude toward her and her children. She wouldn’t be killed in the Elven Republic, but her children—my sister and I, would be made miserable.”

Stephanie nodded, thinking of the Salem witch trials which would have been at least a century before Michael’s father visited Earth. “Did your sister visit?”

“No, mostly because there wasn’t time. After I redeem myself here, we’ll meet.”

“Was your father disappointed in you for being sentenced to prison?” Amelia asked.

“Yes and no. He understood that I was bullied, but elves are less emotional than humans and he couldn’t understand why I had thoughts of killing King Bully.
